Obituary Notice for George Walter Chase (LM775)

GEORGE WALTER CHASE of Chipman passed away at the Chalmer’s Regional Hospital, Fredericton on Thursday, February 2^nd, 2012 at the age of 82. Walter was born in Brigg’s Corner on September 10^th, 1929 son of the late Cecil and Verna (Murray) Chase.
Survived by his loving wife, Joyce; three daughters, Tamara (David) Duke of Lorneville, NB; Karen (Scott) McCoy of Lincoln and Kathy Chase of Kingston, Ontario; two sons, Nicholas (Jo-Ann) Chase and Dale (Dyann) Chase, both of Chipman; four step-daughters, Carla Briggs (Kevin Fairweather) of Chipman, Jill (Tony) Branscombe of Chipman, Valerie (Lowell) Blyth of Chipman and Nancy Briggs of Fredericton; two brothers, Wendell (Joanne) Chase and Allison (Rowena) Chase both of Chipman, also survived by 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Willard and Burns.

Walter loved bowling, curling and his church, where he would ring the bell for the Sunday morning service. Walter was first employed as a logger, then worked for DOT. In 1959 he joined the military where he served in the Canadian Military as MCpl CHASE, G.W. CD RCCS from October 1959 to February 1985. Walter had a large and extended family that he loved dearly.

Resting at the Chipman Funeral Home until Tuesday, February 7^th, 2012 when funeral service will be held from the Chipman United Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Yvette Swan officiating. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home, on Monday, February 6^th, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Legion service will be held on Monday evening at 6:45. Memorials to the Chipman Bowlarama, Chipman United Church or donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Spring interment will be in the Red Bank United Church Cemetery.

SGT DAN J PERRY IS RETIRING ON 01 MAR 12 AFTER MORE THAN 27 YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO CANADA AND TO THE CANADIAN FORCES.

DAN ENROLLED IN THE CF (THE FIRST TIME) ON 22 MAY 1980 AS A RAD TECH. HE HAS ENJOYED POSTINGS TO THE 1ST CDN SIGS REGT IN KINGSTON, CFB GANDER, CFS LEITRIM WHERE HE DID A 6 MONTH TOUR TO CFS ALERT IN 1991, L.E.T.E. AND 76 COMM GP AT UPLANDS. IN 1996, HE RELEASED AND WORKED FOR OC TRANSPO AS A COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIST FOR A FEW YEARS BEFORE MOVING TO BANK OF CANADA AS A NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR. IN 2001, HE RETURNED TO THE CF AS A MCPL AND WAS EMPLOYED AT CFS LEITRIM WHERE HE ENJOYED 4 MORE 3 MONTH TOURS TO OUR MOST NORTHERN POST WITH HIS FINAL TOUR IN 2009 AS DET COMMANDER FOR OP NEVUS (FORMERLY KNOWN AS OP HURRICANE). UPON HIS RETURN, HE WAS SELECTED TO BECOME A TCI INSPECTOR AND HAS ENJOYED THE JOB, THE TRAVELING AND HIS CO-WORKERS VERY MUCH.

DAN IS STARTING A NEW CAREER WITH THE PUBLIC SERVICE IN THE NCR.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father at Surrey Memorial Hospital, January 9, 2012. Clay was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 29, 1925. He lived in Winnipeg until he joined the RCAF in 1944. After the war, he joined The Royal Canadian Signal Corp. Clay met and married his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty Jones. They lived in Winnipeg, Fort Churchill, Ladner and Ottawa before settling in Delta, BC. After retiring from the Armed Services, Clay worked for ten years with Zurich Insurance.

Clay spent many happy hours in his garden, on fishing trips, traveling, volunteering for Delta Hospital Auxiliary, Lifeline and the Delta Emergency Response Team.

Clay will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by family and friends. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty in 2010. Clay is survived by his sister Shirl; loving sons, Doug (Janice), Tom (Colleen), Bryan (Debbie); grandchildren Jennifer, Allison, Megan and Craig, and great-grandchildren, Anna and Abigail.

A service celebrating Clay's life will be held on Saturday, February 4th, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

Loving wife of the late Fred, (founding member of the Signallers Club of Canada) mother to Terry, Mike (Laurie), Mark (Donna), the late Matthew (Karen), Martin, Kim (Paul) and Kelly (Dave). Pippy will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Angie, Scott, Crystal, Shaun, Matt, Cortney, Devon, and Justin, and her great grandchildren (who affectionately called her “Gigi“). She will be greatly missed by her family in PEI. She bids a fond farewell to her military friends who filled her life with big-band music and dances at the Mess. Pippy was a classy lady who touched the hearts of everyone she met. At Pippy's request, a private service will be held by the family. Michael loved to play golf and poker. He was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Michael will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Genevieve; son, Kevin Lagos (Cathy); daughters, Kathy Lagos; Tina Gatien (Vance) and Chantelle Anderson; granddaughter, Leanne Lagos; grandson, Kale Lagos; special niece, Teresa Ingraham (Wayne). Predeceased by his parents.

Our hero has fallen. On Friday, January 13, in his 88th year, our husband, dad, Didi and Popski died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He will be forever missed by Mary, his wife of 64 years, daughters Teena, Judy (Bryan Hayes), and Donna (Tony Huber), and grandchildren Taryn, Lauren, Brock, Brett and Brad. Alex was born in Lachine, Quebec, and at the tender age of nine met Mary, the "girl-next-door". He attended Central Park School, then Lachine High School, later joining the Bell Telephone Company in Montreal as a linesman. Alex enlisted in the Signal Corps of the Canadian Army and spent 3 years overseas during WW 11, being stationed in the Netherlands, Belgium, England and France. He retired from the Bell after 37 years of service. When asked if you knew Alex, you would always remember his quick wit and sharing the latest jokes. He could really tell a story. Alex and Mary moved to Langley, B.C. in their early sixties to be closer to the family and enjoyed much travelling throughout many parts of the world while still enjoying sports, music, gardening and fishing. At the Langley Legion he served in the capacity as Service Officer for 10 years. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 20, 1:30 P.M. at the Langley Legion, 20570 56th Avenue, Langley, V3A 3Z1. CECIL CHASE Peacefully with his family at his side we announce the passing of Cecil on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the age of 68 years. Cecil leaves behind his wife Paulette, of 45 years, daughter Wendy and son Darryl; brother Vernon (Darlene), sisters April (Martin) and Anita; father-in-law Emilien Lussier, brother-in-law Gerald (Elaine) and sister-in-law Lorraine. He also leaves his best friends Lynn and Wally, Connie and Dale and all his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Vivian Chase and mother-in-law Jeannette Lussier. Cecil was born in Sherridan, MB on November 26, 1942. He attended classes in Winnipeg and country schools in Saskatchewan. Cecil and Paulette were married on August 14, 1965. Prior to his marriage he joined the Canadian Armed Forces on February 26, 1962. He served for over 21 years. After the services he worked at Marshall Wells and then came back to his same position of the Armed Forces as a civilian for 35 years. After retirement, Cecil and Paulette had spent four wonderful years in Donna, TX. He was a member of the 4th degree of the Knights of Columbus and a Royal Canadian Legion Member. The family would like to thank Dr. G. Campbell of Beausejour, the staff of Health Sciences Centre and the Victoria Hospital for all their care and compassion, also all who visited, called and offered their support during these trying years. Passed away at Quebec Hospital (CHUL) on December 16th 2011, at age 60. Predeceased by his wife Claire Ouellet. Formerly of Rivière-Bleue, Témiscouata, he was of late a resident of Val-Bélair.

Predeceased by his father Roland St-Pierre and sister Bérangère (Gilles Chamberland). He leaves in mourning his son Jonathan, his mother Jeannine Beaulieu, his sisters and brother: Jocelyne (Gaston St-Pierre deceased), Maria (Gabriel Gagné deceased), Ginette, Berthier (Anne Quenneville) and Guylaine. He also leaves in mourning Marie-Eve Dubé, his nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and his friends.

Funeral mass was held December 23rd. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mario's memory may be made to the Rivière-Bleue Parish, 25 rue de l'Église Nord, Rivière-Bleue, Québec, G0l 2B0.

After graduating University of Toronto Schools (UTS) and working for Bell Canada, Don joined the 2nd Division Signals as a signalman then attended the Officer’s Training Center rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He volunteered for overseas duty in 1942, landed with the troops at Gold Beach on D-Day and saw continuous action as part of Operation Market Garden, the liberation of Holland. Mentioned in Dispatches for Distinguished Service and decorated with the Oak Leaf Cluster, Don was promoted to Captain and, in the postwar years, to Major. He served as an Aide de Camp to Ontario Lieutenant Governors, the Honourable Keiller MacKay and Honourable Earl Rowe. To ensure that future generations of Canadians would know and understand the sacrifice made for freedom, Don produced a DVD and delivered lectures to schools across southern Ontario. In October 2011, Don received the Minister of Veteran Affairs Commendation, an award recognizing those who provided outstanding service to their country, their communities and their fellow Veterans. Don had an outstanding career in the land development and Real Estate industry. A strong advocate for municipal planning, he participated in the development of Canada’s ``First Planned Community`` Bramalea, projects in Orange County California and ultimately assembled large tracts of land into what has become the heart of Mississauga. He had a strong sense of civic duty serving as a member of Etobicoke Council from1965-1982, member of the Conservative Party and a lifelong Kiwanian. For the last 10 years, Don became a well known and respected member of the community of Port Perry. He had a great passion for boats and music especially big band, swing and jazz. Though his last note has sounded, like a catchy tune, his memory springs easily to mind. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Donald Kerr was held in the chapel on Tuesday December 20, 2011. You may have received an email from one of our club members in the past week asking for money. It did seem suspicious and I took no action. The explanation is provided below:

This is to advise that I am NOT in the UK attending any meeting of any kind. I DO NOT NEED $3000. If I did and I was in distress, I would certainly contact my family first by telephone and not email. Please DO NOT RESPOND to the hacker's email. The originator of the scam was obviously not a grade school dropout. However, in correspondence with him/her/it, it became increasingly apparent that the English language was not his/her/it's primary language.

You might want to BLOCK the redintrepid (at) hotmail.ca incoming messages on your computer. The problem remains that the harvester (hacker) now has my complete address book; has
changed the password on the ISP preventing me from accessing the account but allows the hacker to receive any incoming email on that account. Do not use the above email address for any future emails to me. I have changed my email address.

Interpol has been notified via the Cardiff Constabulary in South Glamorgan, UK. I was able to get a telephone number that the hacker supplied and an address in Cardiff. That info was given to the Police who will send an alert via Interpol computer services.

I regret any inconvenience this may have caused you through no fault of my own. As a further precautionary measure, you are requested to alert all your address book correspondents about
this scam and ask them, too, to block the redintrepid email address. Thank you very much for your understanding

Retirement: Don Street

Master Warrant Officer Don Street will be retiring from the Canadian Forces on 22 Feb 2012 after 29 plus years of loyal and dedicated service. Don Street joined the CF 30 Jun 82. After completion of recruit training at Cornwallis, he and 5 others were sent to CFB Cold Lake, Alberta as connection trainees. They were then sent to CFSCE Kingston to commence their technical training. Don was then posted to NRS Newport Corner Nova Scotia in Dec 83 as a TQ3 Radio tech. After many conversations with career managers, it became known that upon promotion to Cpl, Don wanted to go west. He was posted to 727 Comm Sqn St John’s Newfoundland in July 1988. While there, Don completed a tour in CFS Alert from Sep 90 to Mar 91. Many more discussions with career managers about being posted out west got him posted to CFB Petawawa in Jul 92 as a MCpl. Don remained in Petawawa until 04. While in Petawawa Don served with 2 RCHA, 2 Svc Bn and 2 ASG Sig Sqn. Completing 4 tours in this time frame and numerous domestic operations. These tours consisted of, Op Mandarin, Primosten, Croatia, from Aug 94 to Feb 95, Op Alliance, Coralici, Bosnia, from Jan 96 to Jul 96, Op Palladium, Velika Kladusa, Bosnia, from Jul 98 to Mar 99 and Task Force Kabul, Camp Julien, Afghanistan from Jul 03 to Feb 04. Giving up on the possibility of ever being posted west, MWO Street accepted a posting to DGIMO Ottawa in Jul 04 as a WO and subsequently was posted to DGLEPM Hull in Jul 06 as a MWO. MWO Street was posted back to Petawawa in Jul 08 to assist in the stand up the LFCA EFCC CIS.

Don is planning to remain in the local area with his spouse Viola and their three sons Matthew, Jonathan and Nicholas. A retirement luncheon is being held at Danny’s Restaurant in Petawawa on 27 Jan 2012 at 1300hrs. At Don’s request, this is to be a small gathering of the EFCC CIS section and a few invited guests. Valerie Jane Dale (nee Sweet) West, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family at Freeport Health Centre of Grand River Hospital on Thursday, November 10, 2011, age 54 years.
Born in Exeter, Ontario, Valerie had served in the Canadian Forces Reservist and had worked as a By-Law Officer in Thunder Bay and a Private Investigator in Kitchener. Valerie is survived by her sisters, Gail Graham of Stoney Plain, A.B., Cheryl Kee and Chris of Delaware, Ontario and a brother, Ian Sweet of Cambridge. She is survived also by nieces, Erin Kee-Lindsay (Neil), Allison Kee and Haley Sweet. Predeceased by her parents, Douglas and Marian Sweet. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Valerie's Life was held at the Waterloo Regional Police Association on Sunday, November 13th, 2011.

Medical Update Dave Munro

We are finally able to give a date for David’s bypass surgery. To great relief the call came yesterday from Victoria Jubilee. On Mon. November 21st we are to wait for the hospital to call to say, come on down…… not to hurry because the bed will be available no matter what time we get there. On Tuesday, they will do an orientation, then on Wednesday, they will do the bypass surgery. I think they keep them in 4 to 5 days so he should be ready to come home on Monday or Tuesday if all goes well which I expect it will.

He had his heart attack on the 29th of October and will have the surgery on the 23rd of November which I think when comparing to the past, this is pretty good.

Coming home by train was a pretty nice trip for him…. For anyone I’m sure but he really did enjoy it and took it as a gift. We’ve had a bit of a run around since his return but in the end all is working out fine. David is used to getting up each day and getting out the door with a mission in mind. It’s been difficult to keep him down. Since his return he did have to spend 4 days in Jubilee for assessments etc. For the first time ever he had to miss this year’s Remembrance Day which made him sad as he is so committed to the veteran’s programs.

Our son Tim is flying home from Singapore for all of next week. We’ll both be so glad to see him of course. Besides, I need him here to do the driving. With the loss of site in my right eye from glaucoma I’m a hazard on the roads at night.

Before signing off, just want to say thank you to all of you who have sent messages and cards with prayers attached, please don’t stop with the prayers.. They are so appreciated. We are doing ok though.

While the ordinary Soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling stand?
Or would you want a Soldier--
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end?
He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honour
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:

Of Berwick, Kings Co., formerly of Halifax, passed away suddenly on Friday, October 28, 2011, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Halifax, Bill was a son of the late Stanley W. and Geraldine May (Clancey) Clarke. He is survived by his wife, Karen F. (Gordon) Clarke; brother Edward (Judith), Berwick; sister, Helen Querin, Surrey, B.C.; brother-in- law, Richard (Jeanne) Gordon, and son Brian, Burlington, ON.; Gary and Maureen Corrigan and extended Clancey family members in Ontario, B.C. and Nova Scotia. Bill had a 33 year career in the Canadian Armed Forces, starting in 1956, with service in the Canadian Army 3 RCHA, followed by the remaining years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. His postings included Germany (Army), Clinton, On, Newport Corner, NS , Goose Bay, NL and various positions in the Halifax area. Bill was an avid plastic modeller enthusiast, enjoyed painting with water colours, carving, and after his retirement expanded his interest in cooking. He was a life long blood donor and an avid reader. Cremation has taken place. A remembrance afternoon will be held on Saturday, November 5th. 2-3pm for visiting at 223 Main Street , Berwick. WERRY, STEPHEN DRUMHELLER - April 11, 1939 - July 19, 2011 - Baie Verte, N.B. - Died in Moncton City Hospital on July 19th, 2011, after a lengthy illness. He had a career in the Canadian army. He was a soldier, aviator, mariner, and scholar and lived his life with courage and an adventuresome spirit. One unique facet of Steve's lengthy Service was that he was one of only ten officers in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals to qualify as an Army Pilot and wear the coveted Canadian Army Flying Badge. Survived by his loving wife Sally M. Scott and her family, his brother John of Florida, and the Drumheller family of Maryland. Interment will be in the National Military Cemetery in Ottawa at a later date. Donations in Stephen's memory made to the Sackville Memorial Hospital would be appreciated. She is survived by her brother James Franklin Saunders (Ann) of Orillia, Ontario. She leaves to mourn and be thankful for her life her husband and soul mate Ramsey Muir Withers, her children James Scott Withers (Caroline), Leslie Susan Gray (Paul), Deidre Ann Brown (John) and her grandchildren Rebecca and Iaian Withers, Samantha and Erik Hunter, Lauren and Kristen Schultz, Justine and Laine Brown, Paul, Emily and Erin Gray. She will also be missed by many friends including "The Steel Chestnuts" (also Army wives who have been close for over fifty years) Barbara Preston of Victoria, BC, and Jane Shaw of Ottawa. CLARKE, CWO Donald MMM, CD - RC Sigs, H of C January 24, 1927 - October 22, 2011 Don passed away peacefully with Vera (nee Smythe), his devoted wife of 61 years, by his side on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the age of 84. Loving father of Scott (Teresa) and grandfather of Ian and Heather. Brother to Kenneth (Kay) of Estevan, Saskatchewan, and pre-deceased by his siblings James, Minerva, Dougal, Francis, Jack, and Vivian. A boy soldier in World War II, Don's military career spanned 34 years, including time with the Royal Canadian Signals Corps and UN peacekeeping missions, finishing as Military Secretary to the Minister of National Defence. His final civilian appointment was Assistant Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Commons. Don's smile, courtesy and good humour will be missed by all who knew him. The family thanks all of our friends for the visits and emotional support over the past few weeks. Sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff at The Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus Neurology Unit and the General Campus Oncology Unit for the exceptional skill and compassion they demonstrated in caring for Don. Dad was in the hospital about 7 weeks ago....He has been diagnosed with cancer....His surgery went well and he is starting his Kemo this week...the Doctor has said that it looks like the surgery got the cancer and it did not go outside the walls of the intestine....so on all accounts the prognoses looks good....his Kemo treatments are going for about 6 months.....He is in very good spirits....

It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of Tony Goveia of Perth Community Care, Perth, ON, on October 10, 2011 at the age of 78. Tony was born in Luanshyia, Rhodeshia, South Africa on December 10, 1932 and was the youngest son of the late Mabel (Jensen) and Manuel Goveia. Tony will be remembered with great love and affection by his wife Sylvia (Leonard), sons Gerry, Joe (Karoline) , Chris (Tammy), Fred (Steacy), daughters Jessica, Janine and Jennifer (Jason). He was predeceased by eldest son Michael. Lovingly remembered by grandchildren Stephanie, Marc, Jamie, Jesslena, Jessica, Brandon, Nicholas, Olivia, Alexis and Mia, Step-grandchildren Crystal and Charlie Miller, and God-Child, Amanda-Pearl Sicotte. Over a span of 25 years, Tony helped raise many foster children who also will miss him dearly. We shared many interesting items and jokes from the internet regularly. I only learned of his ill-health a few months ago. He concealed his suffering very well. I would never have guessed from his notes. He was so upbeat! I'm sure Jim will be missed by many family members and close friends. My sympathy goes out to all those who were close to him. July 25, 1940 – October 14, 2011: It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Steffan. After a year-long battle with cancer, Jim passed away on Friday, October 14, 2011 at the Victoria Hospice. He is survived by his loving wife, Fran (Pinky) of 43 years; and his children, John (Lysa), Rhonda and Tony (Renita). He is also survived by his sisters, Ester, Cecile and Agnes; brother, Basil; and grandchildren, Tyler, Jared, Nick and Natysha. Born the third youngest of 11 children in Rouyn, Quebec, Jim left the small farming town for a career in the Canadian Army. Jim had a long military career retiring in 1994 after 37 years. Jim was very active during his time in the service, completing tours of Congo, Cyrpus, Egypt and Germany to name a few. One of the highlights of his time in the army was the year he spent on the newly formed Canadian Armed Forces Motorcycle Display Team travelling Canada during the Canadian Centennial performing stunts. After many years as a vehicle technician, Jim retired to Trail, BC. In 1997 he and Fran moved back to Victoria, BC to be with family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Branch #91 (Langford), 761 Station Avenue. A date & time will be announced shortly.

A life lived July 25, 1938 - September 28, 2011. A life shared with his beloved Sandra since their marriage October 23, 1965. He expressed that love every day. Born on Rae Crest farm in Cape Breton to Robert and Katherine Redmond, one of five siblings. Predeceased by his dear sister Georgie in Alberta and brother Richard in North Carolina. Survived by sisters Olive in Nova Scotia and Patricia in Massachusetts. Eric's career was in the Canadian military with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He was a paratrooper, a para instructor, a lineman and a communications equipment technician. His postings were the School at CFB Kingston, 2nd Airborne Signal Troop at Camp Borden, No. 2 Signal Squadron Airborne Element at Camp Petawawa, CFB Halifax, CFS Carp, NDHQ and CFS Leitrim. He served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Egypt and at Alert in the Northwest Territories. He was a recipient of the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. Eric was always passionate about the land and its stewardship - from the farm overlooking Sydney harbour, to Pope Island in Passamaquoddy Bay, to the cottage at Windmill Point on Campobello Island - all such special places to him. He also had an affinity for animals and over the years had many a special pal. The simplicities and the complexities of life intrigued him. He was an insightful and caring man. Thank you to Drs. Hasson, Morassut, Pagé, Quinn, Thijssen, Cagiannos, McDonald, Pierscianowski, Bugeja, Dales, Bencze and Caskey. Cremation has taken place. Private interment at the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa. A life cherished.

43rd Memorial Service Wegner Point - video

There was a very good response to the 43rd Memorial Service at Wegner Point CFB Petawawa May 8th, 2011 from many Signallers, Families, and fellow jumpers, one fellow jumper Frank DeKoning flew from BC and was very please that he was able to attend for the first time.

Our guest speaker was Lcol retd Bob Adams, it was very enjoyable to have him there as he was the Co of 2 Sigs Sqn at that time. A video was made of the entire service to raise funds to continue holding this very important service. The reason being is we have no one that is able to give financial support for the 44th service. As a matter of fact, some would just like to forget it.

With that being said, the video is now ready for sale and any further donations would be greatly appreciated. The cost is $15.00 which includes shipping. In 2010, we also made a video as a trial, to see if this could work as a method to raise funds. If anyone is interested in this one, I could also make it available for them. Please do not copy and pass it on as this is our only means of funding next years service

This SERVICE MUST NEVER BE FORGOTTEN and as long as I am able to get the support, CFB Petawawa is fully co-operative in assisting in any way they can. It is very important for the family members to know that their Fathers have NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN.

Beloved son of Mary Regal and the late Gordon Regal of Chalk River. Loving father of David and Jeremy Regal both of Germany. Dear brother of Linda Regal-Hughes of Hearst, and Gordon W.B. Regal of Ottawa. Loving uncle of Kim Harris, Stephane Pion and Erin Regal, 2 great-nieces Sarah and Abigail Harris and a great-nephew James Harris. By request there will be no visitation. Cremation. January 14, 1943 - September 20, 2011 The family announces the sudden passing of Bob. He is survived by his wife Iris of 19 years; son Robert (Yvonne); stepdaughters Tina (Bill) Cormier, Heather (Berk) Bilgen; stepson Scott (Christine) Orbell; six grandchildren; previous spouse Heather Wall and brother Calvin. He was predeceased by his brother Jim and sister Irene.
On January 14, 1943, he was born in the OLD Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, AB to Dora and Art Wall. He has three older siblings - Jim, Irene and Calvin.
He was raised in the town of Fawcett, AB just north of Westlock, AB. He went to school in Fawcett and completed grade 10 in 1960. He joined the Army Cadets in 1953/1954. He went to three summer camps in Vernon, BC. He took junior leader, senior leader and driver's course. While he was in cadets he was in two military tattoos in Vernon, where he learned to drive 3 ton trucks on the hills around Vernon. He made several good friends while in cadets and kept in touch till the early 1980's. In June of 1960, he joined the army in the Royal Canadian Service Corp at the age of 17, with his parents consent (in Camp Borden Recruit Training). He reached the rank of cadet Lt. in our corp. It started as the 19th Alberta Armoured car Regiment; it later changed to 19th Alberta Dragoons. He was released from the army in July 1961 on a medical discharge. He was having problems with a kidney. He was released in Toronto, and then came back to Fawcett in the winter/ spring of 1962. He took the Army National Survival Course and made some friends he still talks to now and again. In September 1964, he was married for the first time and had one son Robert. He worked odd jobs from the pump jockey to welder repair, milkman, truck driver, then with the city of Edmonton for 32 years. There he worked in the Water and Sewer Department. While with the city he had various jobs - repair small motors and tools, truck driver, trouble shooter, dispatcher, foreman and equipment operator. During this time he joined the Reserves; first in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp in Edmonton; then 16 years with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment (4ppcli), retired as the RSM in 1980. In December 1980 he started with 745 Edmonton Comm. Squadron till 1989. Then he spent one year with the Southern Alberta Light Horse and finally retired in 1990. He also joined the Alberta Mounted Rifles Association in 1979 as Wagon Master as he did not ride horses. He participated in many historical rides (Louis Riel, Fort Benton, Montana, and Fort Steel, B.C. just to name a few). Soldier Apprentice Reunion

The 10th Intake of the Royal Canadian Signal Corps Soldier Apprentice Program held their 50th anniversary celebration on the weekend of 16th-18 of September at the ANAF Club facilities in Kingston Ontario. Those attending pronounced it a resounding success. Participants came from across Canada and as far away as Germany.

The weekend kicked off with a “Meet and Greet” on Friday evening and there were more than a few looks of astonishment as some brother Apprentices seen each other for the first time in almost 50 years! Yes, there was the odd grey hair, one or two wrinkles, a pound or so of extra weight here and there...but for the most part, the lads still had their trim boyish figures and dazzling looks of half a century ago. However, as usual at these reunions, the gorgeous spouses/partners outshone the Apprentices by many candlepower.

Saturday’s busy schedule included a breakfast/brunch at Vimy followed by a walking tour of Vimy Barracks. The afternoon was given over to a tour of the magnificent C&E Museum. Saturday concluded with a dinner/dance at the ANAF club.

One of the highlights of the dinner dance was the attendance of two retired luminaries of the Royal Canadian Signal Corps… BGen Don Banks and MWO Terry Murphy and their ladies. Both of these remarkable gentlemen were 5 Squadron staff during the 10th Intake’s days in Vimy. That’s why we turned out so special. (they didn’t say that in so many words, but we know they think that way)

The evening was capped off with much wining, dining and dancing. And the blinking of lights by the bar staff to let us know the special evening was “finis.”

Sunday saw another brunch at Vimy and a farewell gathering that was open to all Apprentice Intakes. Tears were shed, addresses exchanged and vows were made to start preparations early for the 100th anniversary in 2061. Unsubstantiated rumour was BGen Banks said he was going to “foot the entire bill” for that one.

Surprisingly, the organization, planning and execution of the entire weekend was done by one person. Tom McClean! Yes, there was a committee (I was on it) but the vagaries of geography, circumstances and plain bad luck led to Tom ending up doing the whole thing by himself. Including providing the dance music and DJ duties Saturday evening. There is also evidence that he used his own funds for substantial prizes and decorating the venue. I will first introduce myself to you; My name is Terry Murphy and I have served and been associated with Signals since I got my first Signals hat badge in 1954 as a member of the 5th Signal Regiment(Militia), Charlottetown and retired from active duty as a lineman, MWO in 1989, and to this day can proudly say that I am still a Signaller after 57 years.

A few months ago I was asked by BGen (retired) George Simpson to become a member of the Executive Committee for the History Project of our Corps and Branch and I jumped at the opportunity to keep "serving" my Corps. George has asked me to get the word out to as many Signallers, Families of Signallers and Friends of Signallers so all will be well informed of our activities to make this book possible.

We all know how important communications are as we lived that name for many years, we have an excellent website at http://www.semaphore-to-satellite.ca/ex_com.htm which gives a more detail insight into this project and the complexities involved in ensuring that all of the info contained in the book is accurate and that it will be factual and a bit entertaining.

There are many researchers involved in the process, with many folks summarizing and funneling information to the author. Folks like Don Banks (Apprentices), Peter Sutton (Archives), Jim Holsworth (Northern Germany), Bill Copperthwaite (Middle East) and many others who are working behind the scene. These folks are dedicated to this process, but they need your input of stories and anecdotes so that this book will reflect our history including all the "warts" and flowers that we so richly deserve.

The Triumph motorcycle company began designing its 500cc TRW model in 1943, but by the time the bike went into production the Second World War was over and the British military had a surplus of motorcycles used by dispatch riders.

Many were used by the military in countries around the world, including, Canada, Germany, Holland, Pakistan and South Africa. This incredible find was at the Mid-America Motorcycle auction in Monterey last month. The pictured 1957 Triumph TRW came out of Canadian Military storage approximately 40 years ago, and has never been out of the original factory shipping crate. This twin cylinder Triumph has chrome wheel rims and gold pinstriping accenting the green paintwork. It is supplied with the complete tool kit and other accessories, including the hardbound owner's manual and sold for $34,500.

One has to wonder what its new owner will do with it. Leave it in the shipping crate making it a fantastic museum piece, or remove it and assemble it? With a mere 15 test miles added by the factory, if the new owner rides it, every mile added to the odometer would devalue it. Tough decision.

This is a program headed by Alice Aiken,CD,PhD, who is an Assistant Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy at Queens University. One of the "spark plugs" behind the scenes is BGen(retired) Bill Richard who has worked non-stop in encouraging our elected parliamentary officials to support this vital program, a big BZ to Bill.

The Mission of this program is "To optimize the health and well-being of Canadian military personnel,veterans and their families by harnessing and mobilizing the national capacity for high-impact research, knowledge creation and knowledge exchange".

This was in the Calgary Sun yesterday. I worked with Hance (all the time thinking his name was Hans) briefly in 4 Sigs Sqn, Calgary in the early 60's. We were both DR's/Sigs Electricians working for Sgt "Sky" Goldring. Dennis Waunch, Jim Laird, Jim Steffan, Len Barnsley & Paul Shilling were some of the other guys in what I think was called Transport Section. Peter Sutton was our CO. I was posted to 4 Sigs right out of the Sigs Apprentices and being a relative youngster, was in awe of these guys who had been to Germany, the Congo and Egypt. Hance's picture with the obit is exactly how I remember him and could even been taken close to the time I knew him. Hard to believe that was almost 50 years ago! RIP Hance. Fred Gillies

Hance Milner, beloved husband of Ellen Rawleigh of Calgary, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, on August 14, 2011 at the age of 75 years following a short battle with cancer.

Hance grew up in Nova Scotia, and joined the military as a young man. While posted in Edmonton, he met Dahline Kandt and started his first family. After leaving the military, he began a second very successful career with New York Life. Hance was active in the community, especially as a member of the Eastport Lions Club. Hance and Ellen met through the Lions Club, and began their happy journey of twenty-five years. He held many esteemed positions like Lions District Governor (37E), and Calgary Police Commissionaire.

Hance will be missed by Ellen; their children Colleen, Darryl, Gerri, Eldon, Patti, Robert, Keith, Lori; and their families. He was predeceased by son-in-law Larry Barton, grandson Daryl, and first wife Dahline.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, August 19, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. A Private Interment Service will be held at Rocky View Garden of Peace at a later date.

Don will be missed by countless friends and family as he touched the lives of many people through various volunteer hours spent with numerous local groups: COPs, CrimeStoppers, Bulldogs Hockey Club, the Maritime Museum and as one of Santa's very special helpers visiting many both young and old during the Christmas season. Don truly enjoyed his position as a marriage commissioner for over 10 years in the Alberni Valley being able to share in such precious times. Special thoughts to his roving coffee group all members both past and present.

Don had great passion for many things in his life, the oldest perhaps being the army. He was a devoted member of the Signal Corp for 13 years but spent his whole life honouring it. He also spent many enjoyable hours fishing with his very close late friend and brother in law Pete Bukovac. The many more hours spent in anticipation of fishing season now over.

Thank you to the doctors and nurses at both West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni and at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, your caring and compassion we are most grateful for. A special thank you to Maureen Shiner who's willingness to give at a time of need will never be forgotten.

60th Anniversary CFB North Bay

1 September 2011 marks the 60th anniversary of CFB North Bay. This milestone will be commemorated with a series of events to bring together former members who served at CFB North Bay, current serving members and members of the community.

The first event is a reunion meet and greet hosted at the AYR Mess at CFB North Bay. Anyone with past or current affiliation to the base is welcome to come and enjoy the evening. The meet and greet will start Friday, August 26th at 7:00 p.m. and finish at 10:00 p.m. For more information on this event contact 2Lt Michael Harrison at michael.harrison3@forces.gc.ca

The second event is an open house of the Sergeant David L. Pitcher Building at CFB North Bay. This is the first time the operations building will be open to the public on a large scale. During the visit of Princess Anne at our 100th Anniversary we had Sam operating VE3RCS when she visited the Museum. He was a great supporter of the Signallers Club and unofficially acted as our liaison in the UK. He served his country with the Royal Signals and retired as the RSM of the British Signals Airborne Regt. Ken served in Canadian Air Support Signals during World War 2, and after the war was a long-time member of the Hamilton Signals militia. His beloved wife Audrey, an English rose, served as a WREN during the war at Bletchley Park in England, where the Nazi Enigma code was broken and monitored. She married Ken and came to Canada as a war bride. She and Ken raised four children and are survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Lt Col retired, Royal Canadian Corps of Signals August 14, 1921 July 30, 2011 Pat was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, the elder son of the late Alfred and Ila (Pentland) Styles. After attending Campion College he enrolled in the class of 1938 at Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, studying electrical engineering. Pat joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in 1941 and was with the Canadian invasion forces at Juno Beach, Normandy on June 6, 1944. In 1948 he married Joyce Kitchen of Brantford, Ontario. Choosing to remain in the military, Pat served in Canada, Europe and Washington, DC through to 1972 when he and Joyce retired to Victoria, B.C. He then began a successful business career in real estate and as part owner of the Fireside Video stores. Pat had many pastimes, including golf, electronics and photography, and was a passionate follower of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Pat died peacefully after a brief stay at Royal Jubilee and Victoria Hospice. He will be greatly missed by Joyce, his wife of 63 years, son Richard (Lana), daughter Diane, brother Geoff (Jackie) and other family members and friends. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the compassionate care provided by Victoria Island Health Authority and Beacon Community Services during the last 7 months. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Lauren (Joel) McLean, Nicole Nielsen, and John Taylor Nielsen. Jack is predeceased by his sister Annie Cook and brother Dennis Nielsen, and survived by his many nieces and nephews and their families. Jack was born and raised on a farm at Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. He attended Olds Agricultural College in 1938/39. He joined the army in January 1941 and after basic training was posted to Aklavik N.W.T. He served the next twelve and a half years at various locations on the N.W.T. and Yukon Radio System. On leaving the North, Jack served at Canadian Forces Bases Borden in Kingston, followed by two years on a NATO posting in London, England. Returning to Canada, he served at army headquarters in Ottawa. He retired in 1970 after 29 years and happily took up the role as “house husband”. Jack was an avid curler and lawn bowler and loved playing bridge. Our sincere thanks to our family members, neighbours, Eunice, Peter, Cheryl, CCAC, Senior Homecare by Angels, VAC, Hospice and the ParaMed nurses and the many personal support workers for their incredible service and help. BEER, Colonel J.P. MBE, EM, CD, RCA (Retd) Born in Charlottetown, PEI, on 20 February, 1920. Married in England in 1943 to Rosalind Joan Whitburn. Father of two daughters (Anne and Jane); three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Served in School Cadets, Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and the Royal Canadian Artillery (NonPermanent Active Militia) in Charlottetown prior to World War II. Transferred to the Canadian Active Service Force on 2 September, 1939, as a Bombardier in 8 Medium Battery, RCA. Commissioned in February, 1940, and sent overseas in July, 1940. Landing in Normandy on D Day as a Battery Captain with 12 Field Regiment. Promoted to Major in December, 1944, and given command of a battery in 14 Field Regiment, RCA. Returned to Canada in December, 1945, and transferred to the Regular Force in 1946 in the rank of Captain. In 1950 he was promoted Major for the second time and later served in the Directorate of Artillery, Army HQ, in Ottawa for nine months in 1951, before attending the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston in 1952. Posted as 2 I/C 81 Field Regiment, RCA, in Petawawa and proceeded with that unit to Korea in March, 1953. Upon the cessation of hostilities that year, was appointed Canadian Representative at the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission at Panmunjon. In May, 1954, he was posted to the War Office in London, England. September, 1957, he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and appointed a member of the Directing Staff at the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston, Ontario. In 1960, he served in Indo-China as Deputy Secretary General (Operations) at the HQ of the International Control Commission in Saigon. He took command of 2 RCHA in Winnipeg in January, 1961 and took that unit to Germany (NATO) in January, 1964. In February, 1965, proceeded to Paris as a student at the NATO Defense College. Posted to HQ Mobile Command in St. Hubert, Quebec in August, 1965 and appointed Chief of Artillery. Promoted to the rank of Colonel in December, 1965. Served four years in that appointment before being posted back to the NATO Defense College (now in Rome) as a member of the Faculty. Served in Rome from July, 1969 to July, 1972 being then appointed Chief of Staff/Deputy Commander, HQ Militia Area Pacific in Victoria, BC. Retired from the Regular Force in September, 1975 after 36 years service and remained in Victoria. Appointed Honorary Battery Commander (unofficial and unauthorized!) of 5th B.C. Field Battery, RCA(M) in Victoria in November, 1975. Assumed Command of Vernon Army Cadet Camp in 1976 until standing down once again in September, 1979. Appointed Commandant of Royal Canadian Army Cadet Bisley Rifle Teams in 1981 and 1982. Appointed Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of 5 Battery in April, 1981, an appointment he relinquished in September, 1986. Colonel Beer has also served on the Executive of the Royal Canadian Artillery Association (1977-1981), the Royal United Services Institute of Vancouver Island (1980) and the Board of Governors of the Corps of Commissionaries (Vancouver Island Branch) (1984-1990). He was a devoted volunteer, working with the Vancouver Island Cancer Centre in Victoria. I recently found out that Len Rae died last October 24th, 2010 at his home in Wasaga Beach, Ont. Len joined the 11th intake of Soldier Apprentices of RC Sigs. 1962 -- 1964. Following the 2 plus years in Kingston he was posted out to 2 Sigs Squadron in Petawawa as a R & TG Operator. We took our pre-para course here together before taking the jump course in Rivers, Manitoba in March 1965. Len got out after five years and ended up in Toronto, primarily working for SIS Alarms and Wells Fargo Alarms until about 1980 when he moved back to his hometown of Wasaga Beach. His health was not good, but I was very surprised when I found out he had died. I don't believe anybody in the Sigs org has heard of his passing.

Gerald Wellington Fleming - 75, of Canning, passed away Monday, July 25, 2011 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Winchester, Ontario, he was a son of the late James and Edna (Jennings) Fleming. He served as a radio operator with the Signal Corps in the Canadian Army and also served as a Peacekeeper. He retired as a truck driver and enjoyed going for coffee with friends. He is survived by his wife, Heather (Harvey); three sons, Randy (Karen), Ontario; Keven (Susan), Lakeville; Jeff (Shelley), Edmonton; step-son, Chris (Natasha), Kentville; sister, Patricia; 17 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his second wife, Helen; a daughter, Beverley; two brothers, Robert and Ernest. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation, by request. I am sad to relay the news of Bill's death on 22 July, 2011. His heart gave out again on the 10th of July with multiple shocks from his implanted defibrillator. He was in his eightieth year.
Bill joined RCCS in 1949 and was in K15 and C7 Operator, Wireless and Line. I met him on a jeep drivers course that year and we went to Korea together on the USNS Marine Adder in April, 1951. He was in Brigade Headquarters when I last saw him. He was working the rear link on a Fuller Phone then and was mightily P.O.ed. Fortunately he was rescued and spent the rest of his time on the liaison team with the 5th Marines, returning as a Corporal. He left the Service on his return from Korea
He worked for General Motors in ST Catharines for fifty years, retiring as Superintendent of the GM Foundry there. He was very active in retirement with the Korea Veterans Unit 15 as well as volunteering with ST Vincent de Paul Society and a local soup kitchen. He spent many years coaching and umpiring local baseball leagues and relished his Nickname “Happy Jack”. You never saw him without an infectious grin and a sparkle in his eye.
Internment is on Wednesday July 27th, the anniversary of the end of the Korean war.
I am proud to have been his friend for over 60 years and will miss him greatly.

Born July 24, 1916 in Kingston, Ontario he is pre-deceased by his wife Dorothy in 2005 and by brothers George, Reginald, Hubert and Kenneth and sister Gladys (Michie). He is survived by his sisters Dorothy (Rhydwen) and Irene (Amey) both of Kingston, ON. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his daughters Judy Kellogg of San Carlos, CA, Margaret Brown of Vancouver, BC, son, Dennis Potts (Wendy) of Newport Beach, CA; his only grandchild Darrin Brown (Alexia) of Vancouver, BC and his only great grandchild, Kara Leah Brown as well as many other relatives and friends. Jack's first career was in the Canadian Armed Forces; he entered in the lowest rank and retired with the highest non-commissioned rank of Sgt Major WO1. He was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1945. He and his family lived in Grande Prairie, AB, Victoria, BC, Catterick Camp, England, Ottawa, ON and Vancouver, BC. In 1962 the family moved to San Carlos, CA where he started his 2nd career in electronics and lived there for 16 years. After retirement Jack and Dorothy moved back to Vancouver and then to Abbotsford, BC in 1990. Jack had a lifelong interest in amateur communications, enjoying many years with his ham radio club. In April 2007 Jack became part of the close knit community at Hallmark on the Park Assisted Living. He was very happy and content in his last years thanks to the caring and respectful staff, the wonderful environment and the many friendships he developed. A memorial service will be held in the Fireside Room at Hallmark, 3055 Princess Street, Abbotsford, Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at 10:30 AM. Roderick Alexander (Alex) MacKenzie, 91, of Glace Bay, formerly of Malagawatch, passed away at Glace Bay Hospital on July 9, 2011. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Roderick Henry and Doldena (MacLeod) MacKenzie. He was employed at Sydney Steel. Alex served in the Canadian Army with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals overseas in the Second World War and the Korean war and continued as an active member of the Signals Association. Recently he received his 50-year commemorative pin from the Royal Canadian Legion where he performed as service officer and was a past president. He devoted many years of his life to assisting people in the AA community. He was an avid tarabish player and always enjoyed a friendly game at the Pensioners Club in Sydney. He is survived by his daughter, Ethel, Halifax; sons, Sandy, Port Hawkesbury, Fred (Joyce), Halifax, Fultz (Joanne), Baddeck; grandchildren, Marisa, Shelley, Jennifer, Alison, Tanya, Alex and Jack; and; great- grandchildren, Victoria, Isaac, Benjamin, Daniel, Rebecca and Megan. He was predeceased by his parents, wife, Beulah (Bagnell), sister, Phyllis, brother, Neil, son, Ken and daughter, Elizabeth. Cremation has taken place. Many of the older Sigs personnel will remember Josh as a great soldier, a great Basic Training Instructor and as a great Lineman. I remember him as a special friend. As you see below ,Josh passed away in Saint John, NB on 3 Jul 2011. There are many stories out there about Josh, my favourite was how he would settle disputes when he was a BTI, it was called "step out behind the drill hall", that person never volunteered to go behind the drill hall again. Glidden Josh Langford, of Saint John, husband of Bernice Isabel (Palmer) Langford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 3rd, 2011 with his family by his side. Born at Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia, on November 1st, 1923, he was a son of the late Leaman Boyd and Fannie Bernetti (Cromwell) Langford. Glidden was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the Royal Canadian Signal Corps in both Kingston, Ontario and Gagetown, New Brunswick. While serving his country, Glidden became visually impaired, and subsequently worked as a Security Guard at the DVA Hospital in Lancaster. Glidden always had a positive outlook, always looking on the bright side of life. He enjoyed music and dancing, and especially loved the company of family and friends, and was an avid fan of the Saint John Sea Dogs. Glidden was a long time member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church. In addition to his wife, Glidden is survived by a son, Dr. Kevin Langford (Holly Seale), of Saint John; step-children, Nola Hatton, of New York, John Palmer (Christine), of Pennsylvania, Brenda Peters, of Saint John, Eugene Radcliffe (Heather), of Saint John, Richard Palmer, of Saint John, Dolores Durr, of Saint John, Rae Alberts (Billy), of Saint John, and Wendy Taliafero, of New York; a sister, Eva Barton, of Halifax; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Glidden was predeceased by his first wife, Vesta Nina (Jarvis) Langford; a son, Keith Langford; brothers, Charles, Kenneth, Austin, James and Fenton; and sisters, Hilda Cromwell, Josie Bright and Ada Cromwell.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of the fifth floor and the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital for the kindness and care shown to Glidden during his stay there. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday, July 6th, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, July 7th, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery at a later date. Ross Campbell is correct. I remember quite well the rebuke we all received in K159 at the school when one of our "Signalmen" referred to himself as a "Signaller." The same "discussion" was carried on to whether "RC Sigs" or "RC SIGS" was the correct abbreviation! Incidental, you may say? Not at Vimy in 1959! Forgot to mention that the reason the newsletter is titled "Signaller" is because that term is gender neutral! VVV Ken Kennedy Debert

The composer of the email comparing the terms "signaller" and "signalman" should be able to appreciate the exasperation of fellow communicators who were not employed in any branch of the Canadian Army and who are seldom mentioned in The Signallers Club ezine despite being members of the Club. The Trudeau/Hellyer experiment brought together communicators from the RCN, CA and RCAF where they were exposed to each others trades. For example: Where each branch had previously employed separate static communications facilities often terminating at the same destination, integration allowed them to work and function as one entity and to retire 2/3rds of existing and duplicated equipment. The RCAF tradesmen were either RadOp211; TelOp212 or ComOp213. The RCN had other trades employing signals, one of which was ComRsch291. English is not my native tongue, but I have always referred to Communicators as Signallers and not Signalers as you put it. I was always taught that even in "Signals" you are first and foremost a Soldier. I agree with your remarks re: Signalman or Signaller. Your remarks are right on frequency! A Signalman was a member of RC Sigs, whereas a signaller was wearing a gunner's or an infantryman's or a tanker's hat badge. Let's be proud of our designation as Signalman! Proud I was a signalman, Ron Roe.

That is an interesting point made by Ross Campbell. When I took over the Club from Freddie McQuillan many years ago, I tried to find the source of the name without any luck; Fred had left us and no one else could come up with a reason. Having been a Signaller myself in two infantry Bns, I can confirm the statement about the difference in the two titles.................Don Strong

I was a Signalman from 58 to 67 and in a variety of postings both overseas and in Canada. Betimes I was on detached duty with the Infantry 2nd Battalion QOR, and Armored [8th Hussars]. During those times, I never did hear anybody in either units referred to as Signallers. In fact, we were most often referred to by an abbreviated form of our rank, i.e. "Sig". From what I now understand, the rank, Signalman, in the Royal Corps of Signals is now described as Signaller, but that's a recent change. When I was with 4 Sigs Sqn in Germany during the late 50s and early 60s, I occasionally heard us referred to as "Jimmy's". In fact, for a time, I wrote and edited a column for our squadron called "Jimmy's Jottings" in The Beaver. Unit lore had it that the term "Jimmy" referred to our hat badge's image of winged Mercury/Hermes, the Roman messenger of the gods, but it has also been suggested that "Jimmy" referred to Jimmy Emblem, a Royal Corps of Signals boxer who represented the Corps from 1921 to 1924, winning the British Army Boxing Championship in 1924. Being an old fart, I'm prone to resisting change, especially change for the sake of change, but on the other hand, calling myself and old Signaller is far less ambivalent than Signalman. One is a trade, and the other a rank. I can live with Signaller.

I (personally) tend to agree with Campbell. I do not think of myself as a Signaler but rather a Signalman. Signaler's (in my opinion) were strictly R&TG ops or guys who enjoyed the wireless radio system as a hobby and/ or defence-related pastime. I hardly think that Driver Sigs, Linemen, Dispatch Riders or Signals Electricians, could be classified as "Signallers". Hell, we never even learned Morse Code but we were "DEFINITELY" Signalmen. HOEKSTRA, LCol James Harry It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jim, on Tuesday June 21, 2011, at home. For his life partner Esther it is the loss of the love of her life and the conclusion of "a life we both loved". He was the beloved father of Curtis (Daphne), and Emily (Jacques) who meant the world to him. He was the proud Grandpa of his little Granddaughter Sadie Lynn, the Princess of his heart. He will be missed by stepdaughter Michelle. Predeceased by his father Jerry Hoekstra, and survived by his Mother Margaret Hoekstra, brothers Ken and Allan and sister Glenda. Admired and respected by all who had the privilege and pleasure of knowing him, both as a member of the Canadian Military and the Winnipeg Police.
